Critical Pedagogy is about an effective education that is beneficial if both student and teacher are equals and are able to learn from one another. Paulo Freire wants students to be critical when being supplied with information, they should be aware of the contradictions and should also be able to take action against said issues. It relies on solidarity, mutual respect and equal footing to be a successful tool for both the student and teacher. I believe it's good that students learn about the way of critical thinking, it will give the good insight about being able to think for themselves and also figure out the right and wrong of certain information. Between Gutierrez and Paulo Freire both wish for students to be able to voice their own opinions and improve themselves, and they also agree that while tests are given do students really learn anything from them. They should learn from more hands on approach to be successful.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy requires an understanding that oppression exists, but that success is still possible for the oppressed. The author Ferrier of Pedagogy for The Oppressed, , believe that education was the route of social and economic mobility for for the oppressed. In the Gutierrez article, there is discussion about modern oppression in the United States public education system. The public education system largely relies on standardized testing to evaluate the learning of students and ability of teachers. Standardized Testing largely discriminates against minority and impoverished communities. Not only does the Gutierrez detail the modern oppressive practices of education but it talks about avenues for change. Teachers and students must accept their reality and work with in the system to change it.
ReplyDeleteCritical Pedagogy is advocated by Paulo Freire, who emphasizes an effective education that thrives when both students and teachers are considerd equals . He encourages students to approach information critically while being aware of contradictions and taking action against issues. Frieire sees education as a means for social and economic mobility for the opressed, because critical pedagogy also acknowledges the existence of opression, but it is also noted that success is obtainable for the opressed.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is a philosophy that details by recognizing the systemic issues in education we will be able to move forward and uplift those whose voices were silenced. Both the author of the article and the people following this philosophy understand that children are being targeted but yet fail to realise that only telling people does not fix it. The issue stems from another philosophical reform effort by the name of essentialism. Which believed that the classroom is only meant for core subjects. This philosophy rooted in racism and division calls for nothing but more tests to further push the divide it created. As mentioned in the article the only way to fix it is to give a voice to the students. Creating an environment where the children can take healthy risks and learn to apply information is the key and how teachers must accept this new intel and apply it for their students' benefit.

ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy focuses on building a democratic student-teacher relationship and teachers viewing students as equals who are open to learning from one another. This opposes the traditional education hierarchy where teachers are strictly above students. Freire wanted to establish critical awareness in students who are knowledgeable about contradictions in social, political, economic, gender, etc. conditions and can take action against those contradictions. Pedagogy requires solidarity, equal footing, and mutual respect between students and teachers for this to happen. I believe that it is very important for students to be aware of what is happening around them and to question what they believe is not right. I think laying the foundation for these skills at a young age in students plays a key role in creating functioning adults who want to participate in life, can form opinions, and want to continue learning. Gutierrez talks about how standardized testing is one of the biggest oppressors in education since it largely discriminates against minority groups and those in poverty, and people need to see these contradictions and change them.
Critical pedagogy encourages students to question and analyze power dynamics, inequality, and social injustices. As for my thoughts, I think critical pedagogy is important bc it empowers students to become active participants in their own education and society. It promotes critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy consists of the development of students knowledge in different aspects such as their own others personal experiences. I think it’s beneficial for students because it would help them to think critically and consider their own and their peers oppressions and how they relates to society. It can cause students and teachers to engage in a more sociopolitical view on things. Between critical pedagogy and the Gutierrez article there is a connection in wanting to focus more on skills that are important like having students face real challenges to prepare them for navigation in obstacles later in life.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy a system that has the teachers encourage kids to stand up against problems and oppressions. They want the kids to have a say and know how to handle problems which is also stated in the Gutierrez article. This helps the children grow into critical thinkers filled with empathy and knowing their social responsibilities like how to use their voice when it comes to democracy.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is a huge benefit to educational environments. It allows all backgrounds and inequalities to be shown. This is in hopes to fix the inequalities indebted into our history. It promotes individualized learning to help students better understand the cultural aspects of their environment and the one around them.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is an approach to education focused on empowering students to critically analyze and challenge social inequalities. It promotes dialogue, reflection, and action to foster social change. Like liberation theology, it emphasizes the liberation of the oppressed and the importance of collective action. Both share a commitment to challenging unjust power structures and promoting justice and equity.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is education that is more focused on benefiting not just the student but the teacher as well. It encourages students and staff to stand against things that have been proven to be problematic. I believe they both want students to be able to use their voices.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is and educational philosophy that encourages students to think critically but the teacher as well which is important for both of them to learn from each other. Honestly I’ve never thought of it before but now that I know I think it’s important for the overall growth in a classroom.
ReplyDeleteCritial pedagogy is when teachers allow their students to explore the relations and social structures of the world. It focuses on critical thinking and letting both the student and teacher analysis what is happening in the world. This idea is similar to the reading in the fact that it wants people to think critically as well as being able to be empathetic and compassionate.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is a teaching theory that encourages viewing students and teachers as equals and acknowledging inequalities in our society. Gurierrez talks about inequalities in the school system, specifically in standardized testing and how it is unfairly biased towards certain demographics. The two can be connected together because they encourage awareness of social injustices in order to create learning spaces that promote empathy, self-awareness, critical thinking, and a desire to make things better.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of critical pedagogy as a concept that encourages students to challenge themselves by challenging the already established practices and beliefs. I think it's a good thing for students to know that what they are shown isn't always right and to provide a space where they feel comfortable enough to question it. I like how the article explores the relation between the principles of identity, power, access, and achievement.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is having strong connections between the teacher and students so both feel like equals in trying to learn and listen to each other. I think that when it comes to making connections, students and teachers should have each other's respect. Connections I can make between critical pedagogy and the Gutierrez article are that both are trying to state a similar point of the importance of having an education. The point of teaching is not just to meet certain test scores, but the impact a teacher can have on the student's interest in wanting to pursue higher education.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is a philosophy advocated by Paulo Freire that makes sure we understand that oppression does exist but that those who are oppressed can still succeed. It is important because it makes us question, critically reflect on our environment and then take action against it. In education, it is extremely important because empowering students and letting them grow as individuals is much more important than pleasing the oppressor that is standardized testing and inevitably doing worse if you have a lower income or are a person of color.
ReplyDeleteCritical Pedagogy is the means by which we educate students to question social structures and their place in it. It places critical thinking skills over other traditional schooling methods. Gutierrez describes the lack of critical pedagogy in the current school system because students face certain inequities due to their class and/or ethnicity. These issues are adding to the achievement gap, and thus students who have a lack of resources and aren't able to achieve what the rich kids have...are now being neglected.
ReplyDeleteEmphasizing critical pedagogy to not only students but also staff deflates the certainty and importance of prior traditional procedures and addresses the intersectionality of lower income schools.

ReplyDeleteI think that critical pedagogy is about fixing the student teacher dynamic to represent a more democratic relationship. In my experiences, school has always been adult VS child… I feel like an adult AND child thought process would be beneficial to us all in the long run. In the article, Gutierrez spoke about inequalities, power dynamics, and individualized learning.
Critical Pedagogy focuses on the dynamic between students and teachers and focuses on the equality between a student and teacher -while allowing the teacher to still teach and do their job, it additionally encourages students to be critical thinkers and adapt life skills and independence.

ReplyDeleteCritical peddagogy is about focusing what the wrongs and rights of the the world and taking action. I think that this can be very importaant during the develepoment of a child. I think it gives them the fredom within their own education. It gives them a priviledge to use and find their own perspective.
ReplyDeleteI think it allows students to see understand differences, inequalities, learning, and many diferent dynamics.
critical pedagogy focusses on the relationship between teachers and students in education setting. It's main idea is that in order to have effective education there should be a democratic relationship between the teacher and the student instead of a hieriarchy where the teacher is always viewed as the more important one. Another main focus of critical pedagogy is that students should be taught about the contradictions that exist in different aspects of the world and work to find solutions to solve these issues. It encourages critical thinking and questioning of things we may see as normal in the world.

Critical pedagogy is an educational philosophy focused on empowering students to critically analyze and confront social injustices and inequalities. It evokes the image of debate classes in high school, where students engage in discussions about global issues, express their opinions, and debate topics they might not typically discuss in their daily lives. Both Gutierrez's ideas and critical pedagogy advocate for the advancement of children, promoting the idea of less reliance on standardized testing and encouraging the amplification of students' voices. They offer not just critiques of society but also practical strategies for change, emphasizing active engagement and participation over passive acceptance.
ReplyDeleteCritical teaching pedagogy opens a conversation of critical thinking and a criticism of systems one might take as standard. Teaching critical thinking skills in schools is the most effective way to create educated, opinionated, and of course critical adults. This style of teaching also gives more of a voice to students that may not be found in a normal classroom environment that usually is rigid and one sided.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is defined as basically teaching students to think critically and question the information they are taught. I think this is important as they need to understand why they are learning what they are. Critical thinking skills are important as they allow kids to make decisions on their own, allows them to form questions, and analyze information.
ReplyDeleteCritical pedagogy is about teaching students to think critically and question the information they are given. I believe this would help students think outside the classroom and build their knowledge and confidence of the outside world. Helping them analyze what they learn will help them to be comfortable to ask questions and to be open to new perspectives.
