3/21…“New Kid”

Raise a question that you’d Like to ask Jerry Craft. It should attempt to be on point for a course like this one (e.g., some facet of how he thinks about schooling, teaching, learning, etc.).

  1. If I had the opportunity to ask Jerry Craft a question, it would be about how you address the challenges of fitting in at a new school with a predominantly white and affluent student body. How do you think educators can use your book to foster a more inclusive and understanding environment for students of all backgrounds within the classroom?

  2. I would ask Jerry Craft what was his inspiration for creating this book? What made him want to make this story? Was he inspired by someone or an event? I want to know his intentions and his reasoning for wanting to make this book for children/schools

I would ask Jerry Craft if this book was inspired by an experience he had. How does he think that the separation of schools affects the lives of the students and how we can change that?

  4. I would like to ask Jerry Craft, What king of experience did he experience to pursue this book , did he try to draw from experience as a teacher or student? Especially in a comic book form. I think it a cool new take than the average read.

  5. If I were to ask Jerry Craft a question I would ask him if he chose to write this book because of his own experiences and if so how much of what happens in the book is based on things he experienced himself vs things he watched other people experience? I would also ask if he created the different characters with real people in mind, like maybe a friend or just someone he knew as a kid whose life and or personality stuck with him.

  6. Going off the discussion we had lst class, I would ask Jerry Craft what he would have to say about educators like Ruby Payne. Jordans homeroom teacher seems like she would be influenced by Ms. Payne so I would like to know how Mr. Craft would interact with someone like her.

  7. If I had the chance to ask Jerry Craft a question, I think I would like to ask him something along the lines of how his school experiences vary or are different from the contents of his graphic novel. I would also ask if he drew inspiration for some of the scenarios in his story, specifically from his own life or stories of friends or family members.

I’d like to ask Jerry Craft what his inspiration was for “New Kid”. Is this book based on personal experience, observation, the experiences of someone he knows, etc? I would also like to ask, as a future educator, how can teachers help prevent students like Jordan or Drew from feeling like outsiders and how we can maintain inclusivity in the classroom in general? What does he think would have improved Jordan’s time at RAD?

  9. New Kid by Jerry Craft specifically references the experiences of a new student who happens to be of color , to a predominately wealthy and white private school. through my read of new kid I recognized many experiences; I although i am white and grew up in one town many of these experiences pertained to me and caused myself to feel small or like an outsider. I would ask if Jerry Craft's intention was to create generally relatable experiences, or if it is just that human experience is generally relatable. His intention may have been to high light one group of people but it showed more general experiences of students.

  10. I would ask what experiences inspired him to create such a honest, true and creative story. The symbolism of the illustrations were very significant. I would want to know what his personal experiences were like to express that even though the students/characters in the story looked the same they were from different "worlds".

  11. Were there any experiences that you dealt with in your personal life that became an inspiration to produce the graphic novel? Because as I read through the book I found many things relatable and even though I can laugh it off now since I have now grown and adapted, I now ponder how many kids to this day have had to deal with these issues in a general basis?

  12. I recall seeing that Jerry Craft created this novel entirely through photoshop. I wonder how he was introduced to this method of creating art and storytelling. Could he perhaps have been influenced by a new art program in his school or found it through a school project. I was introduced to many exciting programs through my school's art department, and I wonder if he had similar experiences growing up.

  13. I would ask him what drew him to publish a graphic novel and what challenges might he have faced in publishing it? Also what was the inspiration for the novel?

  14. Jerry Craft's novel, "New Kid", particularly discusses the experiences of a new student of color who enrolls in a private school that wealthy white people primarily attend. I can certainly relate to the novel especially when I moved to a new county and new school. I wonder if Jerry Craft has put some of his experiences into the novel. What inspired him to publish the novel? How should teachers apply this novel to their students when it comes to students meeting for the first time?

  15. I think that I would ask why he chose to do a graphic novel instead of another type of media to tell this story, how he felt while writing out the scenarios, and how he thinks they could impact both students with the same experience as Andrew or children who might not experience what the character Andrew went through in his new school and how he thinks his novel can help give them a new perspective.

  16. What an adorable book, honestly, I couldn't put it down. At first, I really wanted to tell mom to back off and stop glorifying money as a means to success. She really got to me, the way she treated her husband too? It felt like no one had a say in the house but her which isn't healthy because now Jordan is learning not only how to put the needs of others above his own but that money is more important than self-expression. Anywho...other characters of note: Liam! love liam's story, totally supports the notion that wealthy families have problems too. and its sadder for liam because he will never get the help he needs just because he's wealthy. I hope one day I can help kids navigate their feelings about their economic class, whether they are donors or receivers of aid. Now not so much a character but something that caught my attention is the manner in which Jordan navigates the changes between neighborhoods like using the hoodie to hide and then taking it off when he's out of WH. We focus a lot on how Jordan functions within his school and I'm curious how we can take Jordan's story and expand it to help empower interscholastic dynamics. So to jerry: How would you approach the subject of interscholastic relationships? How students from different schools can treat one another and where we'd like to see this ecosystem of education grow from what we know about Jordan's experience?

  17. If I could ask a question to the author Jerry Craft I would ask what caused him to write the book. Is it loosely based on his experience in school? And if so, did he see change in the school over the years? Did the part in “New Kid” of having a teacher mistake a student for another student who is the same race ever happen to him or a friend? Overall I would just like to know his experience in school and if it was similar to the story written in “New Kid”.

  18. If I could ask any question to the author of New Kid, I was ask him why he chose to do a comic book style. I know that it speaks more volumes to children but why does he want to do that? I wonder if he thought about doing it another way. -Peyton Roberts

  19. So I read new kid and class act and I would want to ask why not go into more depth about some of the problems presented in class act? New kid teaches a lot about diversity and such but class act feels like it only glances at the problems and very rushed. It looks at race and social class more but so many other little problems that were only glanced at.

  20. I would ask Jerry Craft why he chose to do a graphic novel or why he is drawn to graphic novels. Does it have to do with the art or something else?

  21. I would ask Jerry Craft idc there was a specific event that took place that sparked his writing or just his love for diversity and equality and also if he expected this big of a outcome.

  22. Jerry, in "New Kid", you tackle important themes around identity and diversity within the context of schooling. What do you hope readers, both young and old, take away from the book in terms of understanding the complexities of navigating education as a person of color? This book delves into these issues, and I think it effectively illustrates that even if you haven't experienced them personally or aren't a minority, you can still empathize and grasp what it might be like.

  23. If I could ask Jerry Craft one question I would ask what made you want to write? What inspired you to have that passion and why was it so influential for you?

  24. my question for Jerry Craft would be what specific changes teachers and schools/staff do at specifically these types of schools with less diversity in order to make students feel comfortable and included.

  25. My question for Jerry Craft would be something along the lines of “What do you hope teachers take away from reading your book?”

  26. I would like to ask Jerry Craft if he chose to write a graphic novel because of his own personal learning preference? I wonder if he preferred to read and learn through graphic novels and that inspired him to write his book as a graphic novel.

  27. Considering the themes of identity and belonging explored in New Kid, I would ask Jerry Craft, "How do you think teachers can use Graphic Novels like 'New Kid' to help students understand empathy, understanding, and inclusivity in the classroom, particularly in addressing issues of racial and socioeconomic diversity?

  28. When writing this story and creating these characters is there anything you wish you did different to help convey the message to teachers/ young teens to make it more impactful?

1/23…Democracy, pt. 1

Have you done much thinking about democracy and what our schools might/should have to do with it? If so, what have you been thinking? If not...
