  1. I felt that my interview went well. I thought that I did better at holding a conversation with this interview compared to the mini-interview. I felt my follow-up questions also helped with this. I felt prepared and ready fpr a great conversation. Instead of feeling nervous about it, I looked at it like a simple conversation. I also thought it was cool how my interviwee and I got into education with a similar spark of intrest.

  2. Weirdly the most surprising thing to me was that you really can become a teacher from any career. My mom was planning to be come a cardio thoracic surgeon she already got her psychology degree and was going going into med school and was still able to go get her teaching degree even though she wasn’t even in school for education. I also was shocked that she had so much freedom in what she teaches she doesn’t have to follow a specific curriculum.

  3. My interview went well, it's just i wish that it wasn't like a conversation was more like "oh I have questions" and then answered and felt awkward to be like "oh that's cool" or "I liked what you said" and it was just robotic to me it just didn't feel like a conversation and that better than an interview.

  4. Going into the interview I was worried that I wouldn't make the time requirement so I told my interviewee to answer as detailed as possible and I expanded on what he said a lot in the beginning. Towards the end, we still had questions left but not a lot of time so I started to feel sort of rushed. I was surprised how much content arose from those questions and how natural it felt to keep the conversation going.

  5. I think the interview went well. The interviewee gave detailed responses so I didn't have to request that of her. I was surprised that she included some of her personal experiences in teaching but I'm very glad she did. She was able to give answers from more than one perspective because she's taught elementary and middle school and at the college level.

  6. When I asked my interviewee to complete the interview, she wanted to see the questions. She then told me she had been asked to help with this assignment before. It is really strange because she is a special ed teacher who works in Maryland. She Told me the questions are always about the same. I found it really interesting that teaching programs in Maryland have similar projects. I had a similar project in another class, requiring a teacher interview, so I do think, maybe this is a really common thing teaching students to participate in.

  7. I think that the interview went well. I was kind of nervous since I hate being recorded and it makes me nervous, but everything went pretty well. The conversation kept on going beyond the 30-minute mark, but learning what my interviewee thought about the questions I asked her helped me gain a whole different perspective on United States education.

  8. Something from my interview that was interesting was my interviewee's answer to the question of diversity and equity. She is a new teacher, as of 2021, and stated that she feels lucky as she's come into a school system that is already stressing the importance of these topics. It was a refreshing opinion as sometimes it can feel that there are many problems with the school system and not enough change. But to hear that this long standing problem is being lessened and lessened every year is a motivating thing to hear.

I found it interesting how my teacher found her way to teaching. She knew she wanted to be a teacher from a young age, yet she went into medicine and worked in a hospital for twenty years, and she eventually went to school to be a teacher. She taught in many different areas, including English, special education, and she retired as an art teacher. Hearing her talk about her career indecision was comforting since I’ve changed my major and what I want to do multiple times even though I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My teacher gave in-depth answers fueled by decades of experience that was very insightful.

  10. I was surprised at how much my teacher went through the process of becoming a teacher. Her story was funny since she really didn't know what she wanted to become after college and since she did well in her English courses her advisor recommended that she become an English teacher. I also really liked the way she was implementing hands-on activities within her class.

  11. Something that stood out to me during the interview is a quote from my teacher, where she said "I'm not just a warm body in the classroom, or an adult supervisor." The context for this was teacher autonomy, and how she quit her first teacher job because they did not let her teach beyond the written curriculum that they made for her. She believes that her job is pointless if she's teaching things she doesn't agree with, or in a way that she does not believe she should be teaching. I really admire her for this because her English classes always involve diverse books and learning about different experiences & identities. She wouldn't be able to do that without standing up for herself and working really hard to get those books herself, and creating her own lesson plans from scratch every year.

  12. One thing I really found interesting throughout my interview was the things the teacher I chose would do differently. I think it's very interesting to hear someone reflect on things they have done in the past and it even helped me to see how I can approach similar things moving forward with my teaching career.

  13. My interview went really well especially because I am really close to the teacher I interviewed. She made sure she answered the questions in depth and provided me with good answers to the questions I asked. She also gave me really good advice which I appreciated and took the interview seriously.

  14. I think that my interview went pretty well, I interviewed my mom who is a high school guidance counselor so I was expecting to have to alter some of the questions because they were created to be answered by teachers, but she was able to answer them pretty well because she works with a lot of teachers very closely and she also has some teaching experience from when she was younger.

  15. I was shocked to see how well my interviewee answered the questions given that they had been out of the classroom for a couple years to get their PhD. I was scared that they wouldn't be able to answer all the questions I had but they answered them really well.

  16. I had a really good conversation with my interviewee and he told me a lot of information i did and did not know about my old school, It was really nice talking to him again and seeing how the school system has changed since i last was there. To me it is crazy how fast new rules are implemented

  17. The actual interview went pretty well it was kind of funny how nervous I was before we started and I was still a bit awkward but as soon as we were able to get into a comfortable rhythm it was quite smooth. I felt the conversation was great and they were really able to express themselves and their thoughts comfortably which was my aim. Just being able to listen to their perspective on things was something I will take with me as well as their advice for new teachers.

  18. The one thing that I wish I had done differently with the interview is to make sure that all my devieces were charged. I forgot to charge my laptop and it died during the interview and I had to hand type out the whole transcript. I really liked the interview because it gave me a better insight on the inner workings of teaching.

  19. I think my interview went smoothly. I was surprised that it was kind of quick and I wish I had more of a response to the questions to make it more comfortable and conversational. It felt a bit awkward because I interviewed my roommate's mom who is an 8th grade math teacher. She gave me good responses, but I feel like it was a little bit rushed, and I wish I could have asked some further engaging follow up questions to get some deeper responses.

  20. I think my interview went well. I was much more prepared to start the interview but was a bit worried I wouldn’t meet the time requirement but all went well and it was great to catch up with my interviewee and talk about some interesting life changes outside of the educational part of the interview.

  21. Something interesting my teacher mentioned is that she actually helped write some curriculum for art education. Although what exact standards they were I am not sure she was a critical role in writing the Hampton roads art curriculum.

Overall I think my interview went well, my teacher I interviewed did an amazing job answering my questions. I think I could have done a better job of making the conversation flow and trying to make the transition to the next question a bit better. Yet I learned a lot from the responses my interviewee gave me and learned what I should do better when trying to make the conversation flow.

  23. My interview went well but I really wish it was more like a conversation because there was times I wanted to provide some sort of commentary but I feel like if it went that way it could’ve been almost an hour or more in length. I was really surprised to learn about Fairfax County policies and I was told after the interview that they implemented an educational equity policy in their schools for racial and social equity and that they are the first to have a policy like that in Virginia.

  24. My interview went well I think that one thing is we talked a lot about the past being in the class and had a conversation before the interview on advice he would give me as a teacher. The teacher I interviewed was less about the content and more about like getting the personal side out of it. I think that it could've been longer and more detailed but we were talking a lot and had a lot of conversation before hand.

  25. I think the interview went really well! I think I had this assumption going into the interview that the teacher would talk about some of the issues that we have discussed in class and they did touch on some of the issues like standardized testing, but a lot of her answers were based on community, having school be a home away from home and teaching kids more life skills. I really like how the teacher I interviewed described school as a home away from home because that is what school should be for kids. It should be a safe space for kids to be able to learn and grow.

  26. I felt quite a difference in my interview this time and the mini interview. My teachers were very different and had very different views. It was interesting to see that and how it made a difference in the Interview.

  27. "Joe" and I have known each other for almost 10 years now, because we work together at a restaurant. Both of us are around the same age too. Already this gives me a slightly difference edge to the nature of our conversation, allowing it to be more casual and adult. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that most of the interviews will have a low key age gap and their interviewee was their teacher. The boundaries around that bond are different than what I have with Joe, and that interests me. How will that play a role in making my interview special? Let me be clear, in no way do I feel like it's better or worse...moving on. One of the answers deeply affected me, really adding weight to what it is that I'm getting into. I don't want to get into it and if you read my transcript then you'll know; however, I will add that it will never be lost upon me that teachers are directly involved in the lives of many people. I appreciate Joe for being brave and talking about difficult things and I feel confident that our class will benefit from his story - inspiring more to share theirs. I believe these narratives and how we tell them, will be the driving force towards the changes in policies we need in order to help students grow.

  28. I interviewed my mother who is a teacher, and she, as always, encouraged me to pursue teaching or any other career I desire. She also mentioned that every job has its pros and cons, including teaching. However, she never discouraged me from teaching, and instead allowed me to discover for myself whether it's the right career path for me. During the interview, I gained a better understanding of her personal experiences as a teacher, which I found insightful. Prior to this interview, I wasn't sure of the right questions to ask, but this project helped me ask the right questions and gain a deeper understanding of the teaching profession from her point of view.

  29. When reconnecting with my old Early Childhood Education teacher she talked about how she tried her best to keep her school life at school to minimize stress. I always wondered how she was able to maintain control especially since she was teaching me and my fellow classmates how to be teachers to children that ranged from 3-5 at the same time. For example, anytime she needed to get her work done she would stay at the school or work on her breaks so that when she's home she can enjoy her time. She found this very helpful to her mental health. Or whenever a child is crying uncontrollably and students are stressed. She does her best to lighten the mood by telling us this is very normal in our environment. She does her best to tell us it's not our fault and that being in the classroom can be overstimulating.

1/23…Democracy, pt. 1

Have you done much thinking about democracy and what our schools might/should have to do with it? If so, what have you been thinking? If not...
